3 Detox Habits You Should Start That Don't Involve Food or Supplements

So today is the last day of March and I'm wrapping up my Spring Detox series. My goal for this month was to provide you with some easy and simple ways to remove toxins from your body and your environment as you prepare for spring. Spring is the perfect time for a reset as you prepare to enjoy this season of beautiful weather, outdoor activities, vacations, and cute sundresses :-).

I've done a blog on how to detox your body from the inside out, how to detox your home, and on my Instagram page I've even listed some of my favorite supplements for detoxification. Today to complete my series, I'll be discussing 3 detox habits that can make a huge difference for your body. The best thing about it? These habits don't even involve food or supplements. So lets get right into it.

Dry Skin Brushing

Did you know that our skin is our largest organ? We often forget the vital role that our skin plays in our health. Dry skin brushing can help to detoxify our body because it helps to excrete toxins that can be trapped and clogged in our skin. It also improves our circulation as well as our lymphatic system. Our lymphatic system is a network of tissues and organs that help rid our body of toxins. It also transports infection fighting white blood cells throughout our body. Circulation is important because our body needs fresh oxygenated blood to heal and function. By dry skin brushing, you are getting out all the gunk trapped in your skin, stimulating your lymphatic system, and promoting good circulation.

To dry skin brush, purchase a natural bristle brush that is not synthetic. It helps to purchase one with a long handle to make it easy to reach all areas of the body. You'll want to be naked and stand in the shower or tub. It sounds kinda nasty, but you'll have dead skin falling off your body and wouldn't want to do this just anywhere in the house. Start at your feet and brush your entire body in long sweeping motions upward. You always want to brush towards your heart, not away from it. Work your way up from your feet, legs (back and front), buttocks, hips, abdomen, lower back, take care to be gentle over your breasts, then start at your palms and work upwards towards your arms and neck. Lastly, I usually do my best with my upper back. Afterwards, jump in the shower or take a hot bath. A hot bath brings me to my next detox habit....

Epsom Salt Bath

Epsom salt contains a chemical compound known as Magnesium Sulfate. It has been used for many years to treat a variety of ailments. Magnesium is involved in over 300 chemical processes in the body. What does that tell us? Magnesium is vital for our bodily functions. Soaking in a bathtub with epsom salt can help your body to release toxins and impurities and improve it's natural detoxification process. It also has an added benefit of making your skin softer, easing muscle soreness, promoting relaxation, and helping with constipation.

Before taking an epsom salt bath, you'll want to ensure that you drink lots of water. The epsom salt can pull salt from your body (along with the toxins) so drinking an electrolyte beverage after your bath is also helpful. You'll want to add 2-3 cups of high quality epsom salt to your bath water. Make sure that your epsom salt is pure and does not contain harmful fillers. We are doing this to detox, so we don't want to introduce any new toxins in our system. The hot water will dissolve the epsom salt pretty quickly. Soak for at least 20 minutes. Play some music and have some candles lit for a more "spa like" experience. Repeat 2-3 times/week for best results.

Tongue Scraping

Tongue Scraping is another way to reduce the amount of toxins in our bodies. Did you know that our mouth contains some pretty nasty and harmful bacteria? Even though we brush our teeth, our tongue often gets left behind and we continue to swallow bacteria and other nastiness. By tongue scraping, you are helping to remove all the gunk left behind on your tongue. This will not only keep your breath fresher, but most importantly, it will minimize the amount of bacteria that you are swallowing and introducing into your body.

Tongue scrapers can be purchased at any drug store or online. You can purchase plastic tongue scrapers as well as copper, stainless steal, or metal options. Its easy to do: stick out your tongue, hold the one or two handles of the scraper, place the scraper as far back on your tongue as possible, with firm but gentle pressure scrape the surface of the tongue in one long stroke. Rinse the scraper and repeat until your tongue feels clean and is free from coating (usually anywhere from 5-10 times). Do it at least twice/day.

Well there you have it, 3 habits that you can start now to help detoxify your body. These are simple, they don't involve any food or supplements, yet they can have a huge impact on your body.
