Detox Hacks For Your Home This Spring

Updated: Mar 18, 2019

Last week I did a blog post on some simple ways to detox your body as you prepare for spring. Well detoxing isn’t just about your body, but where you live as well. Our environment plays a huge part in how we feel. This is one of the reasons people like to do Spring Cleaning – it gives you a fresh start in your home and a clean slate, so to speak. Keep reading for some different ideas on cleaning and detoxing your home as we head into the spring.

Welcome in the Fresh Air

The first way to help detox your home is by airing it out. Open all of the windows to let in as much fresh air as you can. It will begin circulating throughout your home, helping it to be less stuffy, and feel clean and refreshed. This also improves the smell inside your home, especially if you have been using the heater all winter long.

Another way to get cleaner air in your home in the spring is to change or replace air filters in your HVAC system and mobile units. Some of them will have air filters you wash, while others are disposable and need to be replaced. This includes in your heating and air conditioning unit, and portable units like fans, portable air conditioners, and dehumidifiers.

Bring in Fresh Flowers and Plants

Spring is the perfect time to start bringing in fresh flowers and plants. I have a goal to get more of a "green thumb" because I have never been the pest keeper of plants and flowers. But I plan to learn real quick because they offer some huge benefits. They serve multiple purposes: they will make it beautiful, really get you into the spring spirit, they smell great, and they can help clean the air in your home. Some good plants and flowers for spring include lilies, daffodils, bergenia, primrose, gerbera daisy, and viola. Though there are many different varieties if you check your local nursery.

Declutter Your Home

With spring cleaning happening this time of year, you might want to start by decluttering your home. This is going to make it much easier when you get to actually deep cleaning. Decluttering isn’t just cleaning up messes and putting things away, but deciding on items you might not want or need anymore. Go through each room of your home and decide what to keep, what to throw away, and what to donate or give away.

Try Deep Cleaning

Deep cleaning is the next logical step, where you go beyond just cleaning the kitchen, vacuuming floors, and dusting furniture. Deep cleaning often includes washing the baseboard and trim, washing curtains and blinds, washing windows, and cleaning rooms that don’t get much attention, like the basement or garage. It is important to deep clean these areas at least once a year, though more might be needed.

Toss Toxic Cleaning & Household Supplies

Unfortunately, lots of cleaning products and household supplies that we use have toxic chemicals that aren't healthy for us to breathe in, especially in closed and tight spaces. These chemicals can be harmful to our respiratory system, neurological system, contribute to hormone imbalance, and even be carcinogenic (cancer causing).

Try to use all natural, "green" products as much as possible. Some people even make their own. I love the Green Home supplies by Shaklee corporation. Shaklee is a trusted company backed with tons of research and science. My family has used their healthy living products for years. They've been in the game since 1956! Get Some Essential Oils Diffusing

I've recently gotten bit by the essential oil bug (with good reason) and I'm loving it! Essential oils have some simply amazing benefits. Detoxing your home with essential oils is perfect because they will make your home smell amazing, they can cleanse out toxins, and can also help you feel awesome with great health benefits. Diffusing them can also be a great substitute for your "smell good" plugins and air fresheners that are actually filled with toxic chemicals. Some of my fav essential oils to diffuse to help detoxify my home are Lemon, Lavender, Tea Tree, Grapefruit, Geranium, Thyme, and Cinnamon.
