Superfoods For Liver Health

Liver health is so important because it has many vital functions that keep us alive and well. Our liver performs over 500 functions (yes, you read that right, over 500), so optimal liver health ensures that our body functions properly. One of the main responsibilities of our liver is detoxification. It gets rid of harmful toxins and substances that could harm us.


As as our main detoxifier, our liver also helps to regulate hormones. When working properly, our liver will help our bodies get rid of excess estrogen, for example, that our body does not need. If you have signs of hormonal imbalance or if you are concerned about your fertility, you will want to pay EXTRA attention to your liver. When working with my 1:1 clients who are concerned about fertility, we work to ensure the liver stays in excellent health to help produce the hormones needed for pregnancy. For my clients suffering with conditions due to hormonal imbalances like weight gain, PCOS, fibroids, ovarian cysts, and menstrual problems, we also work to promote liver health which can improve or reverse these issues.


There are certain Superfoods that you can consume which help to cleanse and keep the liver healthy. I have listed these below:


Phytonutrient Plants

Phytonutrients are something that may seem new to you. If you aren't sure what it is, keep this in mind. Phytonutrients refers to most leafy greens and green edible plants. Spinach, turnip greens, collard greens, beet greens, and other related hearty greens are all phytonutrients. These help to protect your liver while also helping to cleanse it.


Garlic

Garlic is a cleansing spice that has medicinal properties. It also happens to be a superfood. This superfood is naturally full of compounds that can help break down toxins and remove them from your system without doing heavy damage to your organs (like an over the counter chemical liver cleanse may do). It also helps when you are coming off an addiction, such as alcohol, that could have already caused some damage. The garlic can help mend the damage caused.


Turmeric

You may experience inflammation when you are cleansing your liver or trying to get it healthier. Turmeric can help with that. You can either take the powder mixed with warm almond or coconut milk in a drink known as golden tea. If that is too bitter for you, you can also try to take the powder in a capsule form. Either way, this will deliver the anti-inflammatory superfood into your liver and help to calm down the area during the cleansing period.


Milk Thistle

Milk thistle is a superfood that is generally found in capsule form and sold at most health food stores. It is used to not only treat liver issues, but to also help repair liver damage. This is an ideal superfood supplement to take as needed, even on a daily basis, for liver health. Additional Superfoods

Drinking warm lemon water every morning on an empty stomach is also a great way to cleanse the liver, promote healthy digestion, and improve metabolism.


Dandelion Root can help to gently cleanse the liver and prevent a buildup of toxins. I love drinking Dandelion Root Tea to reap these benefits.


Studies have shown that ginger has liver-protective qualities and can even help people with liver disease.

 

Apples are rich in pectin, which is a soluble fiber, that can help remove toxins from the blood. As well as Malic Acid, which is a naturally cleansing nutrient that also removes toxins from the blood. They have anti inflammatory properties that can protect your liver. **Reminder to ensure you are getting organic apples to prevent pesticide exposure.


Walnuts are high in the amino acid, arginine, which assists the liver in detoxifying ammonia. Walnuts are also high in omega 3 fatty acids which can provide support to natural liver cleansing.


These superfoods are fairly easy to find and easy to use. They can be found at most stores and markets. You can add these foods to your daily routine and even mix some in smoothies or juices that can help flush the liver and colon.
